Abstract

Citraconic and itaconic acids are obtained in improved yields by allowing a concentrated aqueous solution of citric acid to run into an evacuated vessel heated to 230 DEG C. or higher, distilling off the anhydrides formed and allowing the mixture of anhydrides to react with water. According to an example, a solution of citric acid is run into a copper vessel at 280--300 DEG C. under a pressure of 30--40 mm. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 contains an additional example in which a temperature of 320--350 DEG C. and a pressure of 80--90 mm. are employed, the proportion of citraconic acid in the product being increased. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
