Abstract

2-Methylol-3-ketobutene(1,2) is prepared by eliminating water and formaldehyde from 3:3:3-trimethylolacetone by treatment with a dehydrating agent at a temperature above 100 DEG C., and preferably at a sub-atmospheric pressure. Specified dehydrating agents include phosphoric, sulphuric and p-toluene sulphonic acids, pumice, aluminium hydroxide and aluminium hydrosilicates. In an example: an intimate mixture of 3:3:3-trimethylolacetone and pumice is slowly heated to 180-210 DEG C. under reduced pressure, when water distils off, followed by 2-methylol-3-ketobutene(1,2), which is then refractionated.
