Abstract

The compound, 3 : 7-dimethyl-1-(21 : 61 : 61-trimethylcyclohex - 11 - enyl) - nona - 3 : 5 : 7-trien - 1 - yn - 9 - ol represented by the formula: <FORM:0667107/IV (b)/1> This compound is obtained by treating 3 : 7-dimethyl - 1 - (21 : 61 : 61 - trimethyl - cyclohex-11 - enyl) - nona - 4 : 6 : 8 - trien - 1 - yn - 3 - ol with an aqueous acidic medium the pH of which is less than 7 and which does not destroy the product of the reaction. The starting material may be dissolved in ether or benzene and agitated with a 5 per cent solution of sulphuric acid at a temperature within the range 0-40 DEG C. Preferably the reaction is effected in an inert atmosphere in the presence of an anti-oxidant. Specification 667,106 is referred to.
