Abstract

Divinyl sulphide is co-polymerised with butadiene. In the example, divinyl sulphide, butadiene, sodium perborate and an emulsifying agent are mixed together and allowed to stand for about 1 week at 32 DEG C. The initial pH of the solution was 7.4. This may be adjusted by a buffer solution containing citric acid p and disodium phosphate to 6.0. The divinyl sulphide is prepared by running b -b 1-dichlorethyl sulphide into a boiling solution of sodium hydroxide in alcohol and the mixture distilled. The distillate is diluted with water, the oily layer dissolved in ether, washed free from alcohol, dried and distilled.
