Abstract
1, 1-Dimethylolcyclohex-3-ene is prepared by heating an aqueous emulsion of D 3-tetrahydrobenzaldehyde and formaldehyde with 1.0 to 1.1 mol of alkali, based on the D 3-tetrahydrobenzaldehyde, cooling the reaction mixture and distilling in vacuo the crystalline product obtained on cooling. The reaction is preferably carried out at 50 to 110 DEG C., and advantageously at the boiling point of the reaction mixture. The preferred alkalis are sodium and potassium hydroxide, while formalin or paraformaldehyde may be used as the formaldehyde component.
