Abstract

559,928. Drying granular materials. BATHGATE & SONS, Ltd., A., and RAYNES, M. T. Oct. 23, 1942, No. 14871. [Class 34 (ii)] An apparatus for drying sand or other granular material comprises a tubular shaft or flue tube 13 extending upwardly from a furnace 11, a baffle 21 preferably of inverted hemi-spherical shape located over and spaced from the shaft 13, and a brickwork or like enclosure 17 surrounding the shaft and baffle, the material to be dried being fed into the upper or hopper part of the enclosure and flowing over the baffle 21, where it is partially heated and then through 5he space 22 between the shaft 13 and enclosure 17. The dried sand passes through grids 28 at the base of the space 22 and is discharged down the inclined floors 16 of openings 19 in the enclosure. Preferably the baffle 21 is of larger maximum diameter than the shaft 13 so that the sand in the space 22 is heated not only by heat conducted through the shaft 13, but also by heat reflected downwards from the baffle and also by the hot gases passing through the sand. The space within the domed baffle 21 may communicate with a chimney 23 controlled by a damper 24.
