Abstract
554,582. Electrolytic production of oxygen. IGRANIC ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. April 10, 1942, No. 4756. Convention date, April 10, 1941. [Class 41] [Also in Group XX] A cell for the production of pure oxygen for use in a gas calorimeter comprises a tank 142 and cover 143 of non-conducting material. A depending insulating separator 144 surrounds a tantalum electrode 145. A second electrode of lead 147 extends into the electrolyte, preferably sulphuric acid, outside the separator. The electrodes are connected to a source of power as shown the arrangement being that the choice of electrodes and electrolyte produces a rectifying effect to the current. The oxygen generated at the lead electrode passes through a two part chamber 149, by means of goose-necked tubes 155, 156 the chamber being partially filled with acidulated water by inlet 154 the water being maintained at the required depths by the weir pipes 152. Similarly the hydrogen generated at the tantalum electrode is led off by conduit 159 and is preferably burned as shown at the flame 132.
