Abstract

270,104. Croad, A. K., (Jessup & Moore Paper Co.). June 2, 1926. Cells; diaphragms; electrodes. - An electrolytic cell for producing caustic soda, chlorine, hydrogen, &c., consists of a perforated iron &c. cathode 6, Fig. 1, of U.section and of endless form, rendered liquid-tight by an asbestos &c. diaphragm 13 secured by sodium silicate &c. and carbon anode slabs 22 projecting into the basket cathode and supported from a concrete head 15 which constitutes a gas chamber and rests on the edge of an outer casing 1 supported on pedestals 3. Gas is led off through tubes 32, 34 and electrolyte is continuously supplied through a, float. controlled pipe 30. A bar is welded to the junction of the perforated cathode and the outer vessel serves as a negative electrode terminal. In the modification shown in Fig. 6 the perforated cathode vessel is not endless, but consists of two parallel receptacles 43, the end walls 42 of which are removable.
