Abstract
551,858. Starting. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. Sept. 10, 1941, No. 11588. Convention date, Nov. 20, 1940. [Class 7 (v)] An admission valve 3 for starting-air is opened by fluid-pressure acting on a piston 6, only part of the force on the piston coming into operation at first and the whole force later In one form, Fig. 1, the piston 6 is mounted on the valve stem 5 and has parts 16, 17 of larger diameter and a cam-actuated valve 13 controls the supply of fluid to spaces 21, 24 above and below the piston. A passage 9 equalizes pressure above and below the enlargement 16. Fluid pressure acts first on the upper face 15 ; when this passes the edge 14 of the valve casing, fluid is admitted to act on the enlargement 16, which closes the lower end of the passage 9. The escape of fluid below the enlargement 17 ceases when the enlargement passes the outlet 18, the valve then being cushioned by air in the space 24. In modifications, (a) the enlargement 17 is omitted and the space 22 serves as a cushioning space ; (b) two simple pistons are mounted on the valve stem, the pressure fluid first acting on one and then on both; (c) one simple piston on the valve stem is acted on first by low-pressure fluid and then by high-pressure fluid ; and (d) the piston 6, Fig. 5, is mounted on a spindle connected by a lever 50 to the valve stem 5.
