Abstract

536,331. Liquid fuel burners. ANGLO-SAXON PETROLEUM CO., Ltd., LUBBOCK, I., and NASH, R. O. Oct. 28, 1939, No. 28918. [Class 75 (i)] In a liquid fuel burner comprising a pressure nozzle of the forced vortex type an increase of the pressure of the fuel supplied to the burner through an inlet 10 operates a hollow plunger 3 against the resistance of a spring 11 to increase the effective area of the swirling grooves 5 through which the fuel enters the vortex chamber 7A and to diminish the " spill " or return flow through an outlet 20 to the fuel tank past a plug 23 at the bottom of the plunger 3. In another construction the piston 3 is slidable in a bush at the base of the fuel inlet chamber of the burner and a spring-loaded spill valve slidable in the lower part and is operated by a diaphragm subjected on one side to the fuel supply pressure and on the other side to the pressure of the fuel leaving the valve. In a further construction the spill valve consists of a slotted tube at the bottom of the hollow plunger 3 pressed by a spring against a fixed abutment. In another construction shown in Fig. 5 the movement of the plunger uncovers passages 28 allowing the fuel to escape to a small chamber 29 in the vortex ring 5<SP>1</SP>.
