Abstract

579,417. Liquid-fuel burners. POWER JETS, Ltd., JOYCE, J. R., and ANGLO-SAXON PETROLEUM CO., Ltd. May 14, 1942, Nos. 6584/42 and 9489/43. [Class 75 (i)] A liquid fuel burner comprises at least two sets of swirl ports leading to a common vortex chamber, the fuel connections to the second and subsequent sets being controlled by valves operated by the fuel pressure. Fig. 1 shows a burner nozzle fitted with an orifice plate 4 and a vortex chamber 5 held against the nozzle flange 3 by a cylindrical element 6 threaded in the nozzle. A second cylindrical element 7 threaded in the nozzle and abutting against the element 6 contains a ball valve 9 pressed against a ferrule 8 by a spring 10 abutting against a perforated sleeve 11. At low pressure fuel supplied to the burner nozzle passes through gaps in the threads of the elements 7, 6 to swirl ports 5b in the chamber 5 and is discharged through the orifice plate 4. When the fuel pressure is increased the valve opens to allow fuel to pass also to swirl ports 5c in the chamber 5. In a modified construction a second ball valve opens at a higher pressure to admit fuel to a third set of swirl ports in the vortex chamber. In another modification the fuel supply to the second set of swirl ports as controlled by a needle valve operated by the fuel pressure on a piston at the rear of the burner body. In a further construction suitable for use when a series of burners are employed the control valve for the second series of swirl ports is external to the burner.
