Abstract
529,786. Gas turbines. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. May 26,1939, No. 15690. Convention date, June 15, 1938. [Class 110 (iii)] The exhaust of a main gas turbine 8 drives an auxiliary turbine 10 coupled to a pre-compressor 2 which supplies air to a main compressor 4. The main turbine exhaust is used in a heat-exchanger 6 to pre-heat the compressed air on its way to a combustion chamber 7. The power of the whole set can be varied by varying the speed of the auxiliary set 2, 10 and this can be done by cutting out one or more end stages of the main turbine as by a valve 15. If the auxiliary set is coupled to a dynamo-electric machine 12, the latter may be coupled through a suitable regulator 51 with the main generator 20 and so be used to vary the speed of the auxiliary set. A valve 16 may open the inlet of the turbine 10 to atmosphere. An air-cooler 13 may be provided between the compressors 2, 4. The machine 12 may be used as a motor to start the plant and, when a starting combustion chamber 14 is provided, the auxiliary set may be used for starting. For these purposes a gear and clutch 21 are provided. The turbine 10 may be driven by gases taken from an intermediate stage of the turbine 8. The final exhaust is then passed to a regenerator in parallel with 6.
