Abstract
524,628. Stuffing-boxes. PEARN & CO., Ltd., F., and PEARN, H. W. Feb. 2, 1939, No. 3486. [Class 122 (v)] In a stuffing-box for a shaft, the packing rings are divided into two sections a, b, with lantern rings c, d, and compression coil springs e between them. The springs e are located in recesses formed in the outer peripheries of the rings c, d, and means are.provided for admitting fluid under pressure to the stuffing box between the lantern rings and for mechanically tightening the packing to place the desired initial pressure on the springs. As shown, a pipe i leads fluid pressure to the stuffing-box, and a gland j adjusts the pressure of the springs.
