235,600. Compagnie GÚnÚrale d'ElectricitÚ. June 13, 1924, [Convention date]. Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for; packing, adjusting or compressing.-Packing for a rotating shaft comprises in combination packing compressed by a spring-pressed gland, packing compressed by the action of leakage gases on oil and packing engaging a collar on the shaft. The shaft 2, Fig. 1, is mounted in ball bearings at each end of the stuffing-box. The inner packing is compressed by a gland 6 acted on by a spring 4 interposed between a collar 3 on the shaft and a loose ring 5, a ball thrust-bearing being interposed between the ring 5 and the gland 6. Gases leaking past the inner packing act on oil in channels 10, 11 formed between loose rings 7, 8 and a ring 13 screwed into the stuffing-box. The oil acts directly on the packing in the space 9 between the rings 7 and 8 and on a rubber &c. ring 15 surrounding the packing in the space between the rings 8 and 13. A recessed collar 18, Figs. 1 and 4, on the shaft bears on packing in a recess in the ring 13.
