Abstract
508,776. Stuffing box substitutes. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. March 7, 1939, No. 7418. Convention date, March 9, 1938. [Class 122 (v)] In a shaft packing comprising a ring 21 supported by a bellows 26 and pressed into contact with a shoulder 20 on the shaft by a spring 28, the spring is arranged, e.g. by abutment of its ends against stops 34, 36 on the ring and casing, to oppose the transmission of torsional stress to the bellows. The spring is wound in a direction to oppose rotation of the ring. The sealing surfaces may be provided with fine concentric grooves or scratches to facilitate lubrication.
