Abstract

Ethylene oxide is obtained by oxidation of ethylene with the use of a catalyst prepared by the thermal decomposition of an organic silver compound, particularly the oxalate. One or more heavy metals such as copper, gold, iron, manganese, cobalt, nickel, cerium, thorium, or zinc may be present as activators. The reaction may be effected at 350--400 DEG C., and at atmospheric, higher, or lower pressure. The gas mixture should contain 8--9 per cent of ethylene; diluents such as steam or nitrogen may be present.ALSO:A silver catalyst for the oxidation of ethylene to ethylene oxide is prepared by the thermal decomposition of an organic silver compound particularly the oxalate. As activators may be added one or more heavy metals such as copper, gold, iron, manganese, cobalt, nickel, cerium, thorium, or zinc.
