Abstract

Tetrahydrofurfural is prepared by passing tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol in the vapour phase with oxygen or a mixture containing oxygen over an oxidation catalyst. Suitable catalysts are gauzes made of silver, platinum, copper or copper-silver alloy, tungsten molybdate or vanadium oxide supported on alumina. Diluents such as nitrogen, water vapour, carbon dioxide or ethylene dichloride may also be used.
