Abstract
Catalysts used in the oxidation of ethylene glycol vapour to glyoxal comprise silver and/or silver oxide supported on a carrier. Suitable carriers are, for example, pumice, silica gel and aluminium oxide. Especially suitable catalysts are obtained by applying silver oxide, obtained from silver nitrate by addition of sodium hydroxide solution, to pumice in the presence of a solvent, removing the latter and reducing the silver oxide. Alternatively, a mixture of silver oxide and the silver salt of an organic acid, e.g. silver oxalate, may be applied to the carrier and the mixture heated. It is advantageous to add promoters, for example copper, copper oxide, copper salts or titanium oxide. In the examples, the following catalysts are used: (a) silver deposited as pumice; (b) silver oxide deposited on pumice; (c) a mixture of silver oxide and silver oxalate deposited on pumice, the mixture being heated to decompose the oxalate; (d) silver oxide, copper oxide and barium peroxide deposited as pumice and (e) silver oxide and barium peroxide deposited on pumice.ALSO:Glyoxal is prepared by oxidizing ethylene glycol vapour, in the absence of an inhibitor, with a mixture of air and nitrogen in the presence of a catalyst which consists of silver and/or silver oxide and is supported on a carrier. Suitable carriers are, for example, pumice, silica gel and aluminium oxide. It is advantageous to use a promoter, for example, copper salts or titanium oxide. The oxidation is effected generally at a temperature between 300 DEG and 450 DEG C. In the examples ethylene glycol in the vapour phase is oxidized with a mixture of air and nitrogen using as catalyst (a) silver deposited on pumice; (b) silver oxide deposited on pumice; (c) a mixture of silver oxide and silver oxalate deposited on pumice and heated to decompose the oxalate; (d) silver oxide with some copper oxide and barium peroxide deposited on pumice; and (e) silver oxide with some barium peroxide deposited on alumina.
