Abstract
A non-explosive silver acetylide, hexasilver nitrate monosilver acetylide Ag2C2.6AgNO3 is prepared by absorption of acetylene in concentrated aqueous silver nitrate solutions containing more than 20 per cent anhydrous silver nitrate and preferably also containing ferric nitrate and nitric acid. A solution containing 31 per cent weight anhydrous silver nitrate, 3.2 per cent weight ferric nitrate and 11 per cent weight nitric acid permits acetylene to be used when in admixture with hydrogen, as in coke oven and coal gas, since the ferric nitrate and nitric acid prevent reduction to metallic silver which would otherwise occur.
