Abstract
The invention comprises e -iron carbonitride powder, substantially free from a -iron, containing 1-3% by weight of carbon, and a maximum of 7% by weight of nitrogen existing substantially only in the e -iron nitride phase. It is prepared by heating iron powder with a mixture containing 30-100% of alkali metal cyanate and 70-0% of alkali metal cyanide to 450-650 DEG C., and removing the salt after cooling by dissolving in water. The ratio of iron to salt mixture is advantageously 1 : 1 to 1 : 3 by weight.
