Abstract
Butyl alcohol, with relatively small quantities of ethyl acetate and other oxygen-containing products, is produced by passing ethyl alcohol vapour at 10--100 atmospheres pressure at a speed of at least 20 and preferably 50--100 mol. per hour per litre of catalyst over a catalyst containing at least 60 per cent of magnesium compounds (or mixtures of magnesium compounds with compounds of other light metals) together with a small proportion of copper, silver, manganese, iron, chromium, tungsten, zinc, tin, nickel, or cobalt or a compound thereof. The alcohol may contain inert gases such as hydrogen. In examples butyl and hexyl alcohols and ethyl acetate, and some caproic acid, are produced from ethyl alcohol. Specification 364,134 is referred to. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 the process is effected "at a high pressure preferably 10--100 atmospheres." This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
