Abstract
Chloro-derivatives of isoalkyl aromatic hydrocarbons, in which chlorine is attached only to one or more of the carbon atoms connected with the intermediate CH group of the isoalkyl side chain and in which the said group remains, are manufactured by reacting upon the said hydrocarbons with gaseous chlorine at a temperature in the neighbourhood of the boiling point of the hydrocarbon and with the employment of metals acting as chlorinating catalysts or chlorine carriers. The products possess antiseptic, bactericidal and fungicidal properties. In examples: (1) chlorine is passed into isopropylbenzene at 153 DEG C. in the presence of aluminium powder, yielding b -monochlorisopropylbenzene; (2) as in (1) but using as catalyst a powdered mixture of metallic nickel, cobalt and copper, and continuing the chlorination until b - b - dichlorisopropylbenzene is formed; (3) chlorine is passed into isobutylbenzene at 169--170 DEG C. in the presence of a catalyst as in (1) or (2) to produce g -g -dichlorisobutylbenzene.
