Abstract

A method for the preparation of para-fluorophenol is characterised by heating at a temperature within the range from 175 DEG C. to 350 DEG C. in liquid phase a mixture of para-bromofluorobenzene, a material selected from sodium hydroxide, calcium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, calcium carbonate and calcium bicarbonate and water in weight amount 2 to 99 times the weight of said material, the pressure being sufficiently high to maintain the reaction mixture in liquid phase, whereby a salt of para-fluorophenol is formed and recovering para-fluoro-phenol from said salt, the molar ratio of said material to para-bromo-fluorobenzene being within-the range from 0,5 to 8 when said material is sodium hydroxide or sodium bicarbonate and the molar ratio of said material to para-bromofluorobenzene being within the range from 0,25 to 4 when said material is calcium hydroxide sodium carbonate, calcium carbonate, calcium carbonate and calcium bicarbonate and if desired carrying out the initial reaction in the presence of a catalyst comprising metallic copper or a copper or cobalt salt in an amount of from 0,1 to 10% by weight based upon the weight of the para fluorobenzene. Among the catalysts specified are copper chloride, cupric acetate, cobalt and copper naphthenates, cupric or cuprous oxide or hydroxide and Devarda's metal. Examples are furnished. 2,21-Dihydroxy-5,51-difluorobiphenyl sulphide is obtained by treating a carbon disulphide solution of para-fluorophenol with sulphur dichloride and may be employed as a fungicide (see Group VIII).ALSO:A fungicidal composition comprises 2,21-dihydroxy-5,51-difluorophenyl sulphide (see Group IV(b)) dissolved in petroleum ether.
