Abstract

410,718. Cigarette -making machines. PODMORE, A., 58, Holborn Viaduct, London. July 20, 1933, No. 2323/34. Divided on 407,017. [Class 130.] In a continuous-rod machine in which the rod is formed with alternate denser and less dense portions by delivering increments of tobacco additional to the normal supply, cutting means is provided to ensure successive increments being separated from one another. As shown, an auxiliary feed shoot 5, preferably at the rear of the main shoot 6, is supplied with tobacco by a pin wheel and a picker roll, which may be extensions of the main pin wheel and picker roll. At the lower end of the shoot 5, the tobacco is fed to the travelling web 7 by a rotary drum 10 having side flanges and vanes 11 forming with the curved wall 12 of the shoot a pair of measuring compartments. The drum is driven through chain gearing 17 and may be driven intermittently through a Geneva stop drive. The vanes 11 are provided with a cutting edge co-operating with a spring-pressed backing roll 18 in order to sever any strands of tobacco lying across the edge of the vane. The speed of the drum 10 may be such that the increment of tobacco, as it is delivered to the web, moves at substantially the same speed as the web.
