Abstract

533,734. Cigarette-making machines. AMERICAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY CO. Nov. 17, 1939, No. 30295. Convention date, Dec. 9, 1938. [Class 130] In tobacco feeding mechanism for use in the formation of dense-end cigarettes, tobacco received from a shower is formed into individual tobacco charges, each tapered at one or both ends, and the charges are delivered in spaced relation to a travelling element for inclusion in a cigarette rod. In the mechanism shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 5 tobacco from a pin roller 10 is showered by a picker roll 11 into a shoot 12, beneath which travels a cigarette-paper web 14 on a feed band 33. The shoot 12 may adjoin the main fed shoot 13, the rollers 10, 11 being the end portions of the main feed and picker rollers, or the shoot and rollers &c. may be separate. In the form shown, the shoots 12, 13 are separated by an upper partition 19, and a lower member integral with a casting 27 and with a trough 15 having at the forward end a bottom opening 18 through which the tobacco charges are delivered on the web 14 or on the tobacco stream thereon. A triple sprocket chain 16 guided by bar members 48, 49 carries inclined triangular pushers 17 travelling through the trough 15, which is roughened at 29 to retard the tobacco. Tobacco charges having their ends tapered are thus formed and delivered through the opening 18. A brush 30 sweeps the tops of the pushers. In a modification, Figs. 6 and 8, the tobacco showered into a shoot 55 is received by a charge-forming and delivering device comprising rotor members 65, 66, bevelled to form a V-shaped channel between their edges and a housing member 100, and formed with triangular vanes 67, 68, the vanes on the member 65 alternating with those on the member 66. The member 65 is secured to a shaft 64 and the member 66 to a sleeve 63 actuated by gearing whereby the vanes 67, 68 alternately recede from and approach one another, in order to increase the tobacco-receiving space and then to compact the tobacco charge before delivering to the web 14. Gears 84, 89 on the shaft 64 and sleeve 63 are engaged by toothed segments 83, 88 carried by arms 80, 85 connected to the arms 81, 86 of eccentric straps on eccentrics 82, 87 on a continuously driven sleeve 62, the segments 83, 88 being supported by shafts 78, 79 mounted in the end walls 71, 72 of a housing 70 continuously driven by means of a sprocket wheel 74 secured to the wall 72.
