Abstract
373,341. C a b l e s . CALLENDER'S CABLE & CONSTRUCTION CO., Ltd. and HUNTER, P. V., Hamilton House, Victoria Embankment, London. April 2, 1931, No. 10117. [Class 36.] In a method of manufacturing and installing cables of the kind insulated with a solid material, such as paper, formed with interstices adapted to be filled by a compressed gas, such as nitrogen or carbon dioxide, the sheath of each cable length is applied and sealed under conditions which provide that the interstices of the sheathed length are filled with dry air at atmospheric pressure, the cable lengths thus prepared then being installed and jointed so as to form either a single or a plurality of gastight enclosures, these being evacuated and then filled with the desired gas under pressure. The interstices may be formed in the paper dielectric by winding ordinary paper strip on the conductor in an open helix, or by the use of paper having embossed projections, as described in Specification 344,172. To facilitate evacuation of the cable, when installed, longitudinal ducts may be provided within the cable.
