Abstract

290,806. Callender's Cable & Construction Co., Ltd., Watson, J. F., Hunter, P. V., and Wilson, A. E. April 25, 1927. cables, arrangement and disposition of parfs of. -In high tension and other electric cables, the conductor is free to move relatively to the insulation in a space formed by a tubular sheath supporting the insulation and consisting of metal or a non-metallic material coated internally so as to be conducting. In one form, shown in Fig. 1, a lapping of strip material B is applied to the conductor A so as to form a loose sheath and to provide a support for the paper or other insulation C. The tape may be of metal, preferably non- magnetic or of a non-metallic material, the inner surface of which is metallized to prevent gaseous ionization. The edges of the strips may interlock in the manner of flexible gas or steam tubing. Fig. 2 shows a modification in which the strip B<1> is formed with small projections B<2> or ribs which contact with the conductor A<1>. The supporting sheathing may be formed as a helix of wire. B<3>, Fig. 3. When the construction is such as to form an uneven exterior surface, a covering of foil, as shown at D, Fig. 3. may be provided before the insulation as applied. The invention is also described as applied to concentric cables or multicone cables. The space surrounding the conductor is filled with the oil or compound used for impregnating the insulation.
