Abstract
355,947. Screw fans. CAIRNS, J., 2, Egerton Road, South Norwood, London. Aug. 27, 1930, No. 25509. [Class 110 (i).] A fan is driven by a spring, and its speed is controlled by a friction brake; the casing may be fixed or may rotate relative to a fixed support. The shaft 1 to which is secured the spring 1a carries a pinion 3 geared to the winding spindle, and a ratchet wheel 6 engaged by pawls 8 on the pinion 7. This latter pinion 7 is connected to the fan shaft 16 by gearing which includes a worm wheel 14 preferably of fibre. The speed is controlled by the engagement of discs 18, 20, the latter being on the fan shaft and the former on a spindle 17 axially movable under the stress of a spring 19. The handle 21 can be set in three positions to vary the stress of the spring. The short spindle 23 may be pressed into the casing to cause the gear wheels 25a, 26 to engage ; this causes the casing with the fan to rotate about the axis of the bolt 27. A detachable bonnet is provided consisting of two curved plates 33 hinged together at the top. A clock 32 is fitted in the fan casing and may be used to stop the fan automatically, or to give an audible signal when the fan stops.
