Abstract

354,994. Cable joints. TRIGGS, W. W., 57, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London.-( Ohio, Brass Co. ; Mansfield, Ohio, U.S.A.) July 26, 1930, No. 22615. [Class 38 (i).] A joint 14, 15 between cables 11 is enclosed in a sleeve 21 of solid dielectric material, e.g. porcelain having tapered ends that extend over the cable insulation 12 and enter the expanded ends 17, 18 of the metal sheaths 13. The sheaths are clamped to the block by the two parts 16 of the joint casing that are drawn together by bolts 22. The outer surface of the block 21 may be metallized, or the casing 16 may fit closely thereto. A recess 19 filled or lined with conducting material, connected by springs 20 to the interengaging coupling members 14, 15 prevents leakage of current along the surface of the cable insulation. The lining may be produced by mirror silvering or electrolysis. In a modification, Fig. 2, the casing consists of a twopart insulator 24, 25 to which the sheaths 13 are clamped by a ring 27 cemented to each end and a loose ring 28 screwed to the ring 27 to grip the sheath between the rings or against the surface of the casing. The insulating block may be in two parts 30, 31. The casing may be metallized or metal sheathed and a metallized recess 36 provided in the block 30. A similar recess 35 in the outer block 31 checks leakage along the joint from the flange 32 and connection may be made thereto by the filling tube 34 to which an expansion chamber may also be attached.
