Abstract
369,772. Sleeve couplings ; cable end sleeves. GENERAL CABLE CORPORATION, 420, Lexington Avenue, New York, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Atkinson, R. W. ; 189, Kearny Avenue, Perth Amboy, New Jersey, U.S.A.) April 22, 1931, No. 11917. Convention date, May 8, 1930. [Classes 36 and 38 (i).] Comprises a means of distributing the electric stress in the insulating surround of a cable joint. The cables to be joined are stripped of insulation and armouring as shown, and the core ends fitted with externally threaded thimbles 32. The cables are oil-filled and each end is sealed by means of insulating tubes 35, having a small annular space between them, secured at one end to a gland which makes an oil-tight connection to the sheath and at the other the inner tube is attached in an oil-tight manner to the thimble 32. The cores are connected by a split nut 33. To secure stress distribution the joint is surrounded by an insulating sleeve 50 mounted on an insulating tube 49 and provided with cylindrical metal inserts 52 (shells) of varying axial length which are connected with metal spirals 51 (screens). The smallest shell is mounted on the tube 49 and is of a length approximately equal to the distance between the inner ends of the tubes 35 and is electrically connected with the coupling 33. The outermost shell with its screens is in electrical connection with the cable sheath. The sleeve is fitted with endplates 56 and an external tube 63 made preferably of copper and hermetically sealed. Connections 62 are provided for evacuation and impregnation. The whole can be built up as a unit and slipped into place over the joint. A method of construction of the sleeve with incorporated screens and shells by rolling a strip of insulating material suitably metallized or coated with metal to produce the screens and shells is described. Cable ends may be insulated in a similar manner. Specifications 7766/14 and 247,143, [both in Class 36, Electricity, Conducting &c.], are referred to.
