Girders.-Bridges formed with a rigid loadcarrying member supported by other members from a cable or arch, have the connecting members c so constituted that they are incapable of resisting thrust. The members c are inclined at various angles and the suspending member a may be a cable, a three-point arch, or a rigid arch. The inclined connecting members may be disposed at the centre portions only of the bridge, where the effect of the load is greatest, vertical tension members only occurring a.t the ends.
