Abstract

290,373. Burdon, C. B., (Wilson, W. G.). Feb. 15, 1927. Joint-making packing. - A valve or other closure device, such as a pipe or cylinder cover joint, comprises opposed inclined or tapered surfaces, which need not be ground, used in conjunction with a sealing ring of hard or normally non-yielding material such as hard brass compressed without appreciable distortion between the tapered surfaces, the sealing pressure coming more or less radially on diagonally opposite corners of the ring. The sealing ring is preferably of square cross-section, but the sealing edges may be chamfered off. In the valve arrangement shown the ring 19 is removably mounted by means of the washer 18 and nut and has a free or " floating " action between the tapered surfaces 16, 20. The ring may be mounted on either of the tapered surfaces of the joint or closure.
