Packing, non-metallic; stuffing-boxes, substitutes for.-The piston-rod 10 of an earth tamper &c. is packed by a pair of compressible rings 12 squeezed against end abutments 16 by a spring 15 pressing spaced flanged sleeves 14 outwards against the rings, the neck ring 17 of the gland being freely slidable to adjust the pressure from the outside by screwing down the sleeve nut 18. The chamber 20 is filled with lubricant, through a passage 19.
