Abstract

528,359. Stuffing - boxes etc.; joint - making packing. OSTLER, R. R May 5, 1939, No. 13416. [Classes 122 (iii) and 122 (v)] A packing-ring for stuffing-boxes pressuretight joints &c. consists of a tube A, Figs, 5 and 7, of rubber covered with canvas, cotton &c. which is wholly or in part of substantially circular cross-section and is completely or partly filled with liquid at atmospheric pressure. The area of the ring in contact with the spindle S to be packed is increased, as required, by tightening of the gland K. The ring may be in part of nearly rectangular form, as shown in Fig. 8. The interior may be partially filled by an insert of solid rubber. The ring may be employed in combination with a V-shaped or other packing- ring L, Fig. 11.
