Abstract

- 219,775. Withers, J. S., (Hume Pipe Co. (Australia), Ltd.). June 11, 1923. Butt joints; sleeve joints held by cementing, caulking, and the like.-A butt and sleeve joint is formed by surrounding the adjoining ends of the pipes with a hollow sleeve 2 having an annular chamber 4 in which is fitted a leaden or other flexible sealing ring 6 connected by a hollow plug 17 to a hole in the sleeve, to which a pump 16 may be attached. Cementitious material is then forced into the sealing ring, the ends of the sleeves being stopped by rings 24 of caulking material, cement, lead, or the like. The butt joint is made by packing 15, or a band may be placed over the joint to prevent access of cement to the pipe interiors. The sleeve may be formed in two semi-circular parts clamped around the pipes or as a single spring clamp. The sealing ring may be formed of two opposed U-shaped rings, as shown in Fig. 3. A joint for spigot and socket connection is shown in Fig. 5.
