Abstract

310,457. Hume Pipe Co. (South Africa), Ltd. April 26, 1928, [Convention date]. Sleeve joints with packing compressed radially on assembly; spigot-and-socket and like overlap joints held by cement and the like.-In a joint between a pipe 2 and an external collar 3, or a socket on an adjacent pipe, wherein fluid-tightness is secured by a rubber &c. packing ring 4 which is squeezed between the two parts, the pipe is provided with an annular rib 5 which approaches closely the bore of the collar to retain the ring 4 against the internal fluid pressure. The joint may be additionally sealed by bitumen 11 introduced into the mouths of the collar. In order to cause a gradual squeezing of the packing ring as it is rolled into position, the exterior surface 7 of the end of the pipe is tapered, or the mouth 9 of the collar is flared.
