Abstract

Solutions of sodium hydrate obtained by causticizing strong solutions of sodium carbonate with lime and filtering are concentrated by cooling to between 0 DEG and -15 DEG C. to remove the sodium carbonate as decahydrate. In this way solutions containing 15 to 25 per cent sodium hydrate and not more than 1 per cent sodium carbonate may be obtained. Instead of causticizing in the usual manner the process described in Specification 182,661 may be used.
