Abstract
Sodium carbonate is removed from solutions of sodium hydrate such as solutions produced by the two-stage caustifying process described in Specification 182,661 by adding excess of calcium carbonate and if desired seeding with calcium-sodium carbonate. A precipitate of calcium-sodium carbonate is produced, from which the sodium carbonate may be recovered by treatment with water. The remaining sodium carbonate may be removed by concentrating the solution to a strength of 30-35 per cent and cooling to 10-20 DEG C., when small crystals of sodium carbonate separate, or by treating with the necessary quantity of strontium or barium oxide. The solution thus further purified contains less than one per cent of sodium carbonate.ALSO:Sodium-calcium carbonate is obtained in removing sodium carbonate from solutions of caustic soda such as those obtained according to Specification 182,661 by adding excess of calcium carbonate and, if desired, seeding the solution with some sodium-calcium carbonate.
