Abstract
To the aqueous reaction mixtures of equivalent quantities of zinc dust and sulphur dioxide is added at least 1 per cent (by weight of the zinc dust employed) of zinc oxide, zinc dust, or zinc carbonate, the resulting solution of zinc hydrosulphite being filtered, and then treated with an excess of caustic soda or sodium carbonate, in which latter case the zinc carbonate formed is heated to form zinc oxide. The excess zinc or zinc compound may be added before, during or after the main reaction, or a little sodium hydroxide or carbonate may be added before filtration of the solution obtained from equivalent quantities of zinc dust and sulphur dioxide. The quantity of sulphur dioxide employed in practice is usually slightly in excess of the quantity theoretically required, since the zinc dust usually contains impurities which consume some sulphur dioxide. Examples of the process are given.
