Skid ; band.- An emergency brake for motor vehicles comprises a telescopic rod A pivoted at a to the chassis B and carrying a shoe a<2> which, upon release of a catch device normally holding the rod in the raised position, engages the ground, whereupon the frictional drag on the shoe brings a bowl or roller a<3>, also mounted upon the rod A, into contact with the wheel C. The bowl a<3> is preferably arranged below the level of the centre of the wheel as shown, so that by its engagement with the wheel it tends to force the shoe a<2> against the ground. The shoe can yield upwardly against a spring a'. There may be a rod and brake member on both sides of the vehicle, connected by a cross-bar, and they may be disposed in front of or behind the rear wheels. The movement of the rod may tighten a. brake-band on a drum on the wheel axles. According to the Provisional Specification, a shoe may be used instead of the bowl a<3>.
