Abstract
302,421. Poggioli, L. Sept. 26, 1927. Skid.-An emergency brake for motor road vehicles comprises one or more wedge blocks carried by a support rotatably mounted upon the hub of the rear wheel and adapted on release to fall into engagement between the wheel and the road, spring means being provided for maintaining the block clear of the wheel tyre when in the raised position. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the block 1 is carried by a pair of arms 2 rotatably mounted on the hub 5 of the wheel 6. The block comprises a trough shaped inner part 9 secured to an outer part 10 and the inwardly bent ends 13 of the arms 2 pass through slots 12 in the part 9. Springs 15 disposed between the ends 13 of the arms and the block hold the block normally out of contact with the wheel tyre 7. The block is held in the raised position by a cable 16 connected to a band lever in the driver's cab. A cable 20 limits the movement of the block when lowered. A second block may be provided for braking forward movement of the vehicle. Fig. 4 shows a block 1 which is adapted to be lowered in either direction as desired by the corresponding movement of a sliding rod 23 provided with a fork 22 with which normally engages a pin 21 on the block. A chain may be attached to the pin 21 and extended to the driver's cab, for retarding the block to the raised position. The blocks may be fitted with rollers to contact with the ground.
