Abstract

1347915 Coated products THIOKOL CHEMICAL CORP 28 May 1971 [12 June 1970] 18154/71 Heading B2E [Also in Division D1] A tufted pile fabric for a carpet product comprises a primary woven backing of synthetic thermoplastic warp and fill yarns, the backing being coated with ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer, polyethylene (optionally together with a styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer), carboxylated styrene/butadiene rubber or an acrylic latex. A lubricant can be applied with the coating, before coating or to the yarns prior to weaving. The lubricant may be a mineral oil, a polyethylene glycol ester, ethoxylated castor oil, marine oil, a wax, a non-ionic surface active agent or a calcium stearate/silicone oil mixture. The coating is applied by immersion, spraying or brushing or by roller to the yarns prior to weaving. The yarns -of the backing may be of polyethylene, polypropylene, ethylene-propylene copolymer, a copolymer of other α-olefins, polyester, polyamide, PVC or cellulose acetate. After coating of the woven backing, the fabric is tufted with loop pile consisting of bulked continuous filament nylon followed by latexing and the application of a high density foam backing to the bottom of the carpet.
