Abstract

1425088 Coated products VYZKUMNY USTAV PLETARSKY 1 Aug 1973 [14 Aug 1972] 36629/73 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions B4 and B5] A multilayer stich bonded fabric comprises a supporting elastomeric foam layer 2 having on one face thereof a fibrous web 3 and on the other face a continuous fibrous layer formed by needling fibres of the web through the supporting elastomeric foam layer, the multilayer fabric being stitch-bonded by using one or more warp knitted systems of binding threads 5, 6, said binding threads, forming stitch wales 8 on the other face of the stitch bonded fabric and exposed portions of wale-connecting loops on the one-face of the stitch-bonded fabric imparting a quilted effect thereto, the quilted effect being provided with a coating of a synthetic polymer applied in the form of a dispersion or solution. In a preferred embodiment, the extensibility of the fabric is reduced by laying a system of threads transversely of the wales and under the system(s) of binding threads on one or each face thereof. The foam layer may be a polyurethane, polybutadiene, a butadienestyrene copolymer, a polymer of an unsaturated halogenated hydrocarbon, a polymer of isobutylene, a polymer of a vinyl halide, a polyamide, a polyester or a polyurea. The fibrous web may be made of acrylic staple fibres, polyamide fibres, a blend of cotton and rayon fibres, a blend of polyester and rayon fibres or a blend of polypropylene and rayon fibres. The polymer of the coating may be an acrylic esteracrylic acid copolymer, a styrene/acrylic acid/ acrylic ester copolymer or a mixture of a vinyl acetate copolymer, dibutyl phthalate, a melamine-formaldehyde precondensate and aluminium chloride, the coating being preferably applied whilst heat-treating the fabric and subjecting it to a uniform and controlled lengthwise stretching and width contraction. The fabric of the invention may also be resin impregnated.
