Foam-backed carpets comprise a web of carpeting to the back of which a foamed, resilient, rubber-like layer is bonded by means of an intermediate layer comprising a thermoplastic polymer of an olefin having from 2 to 4 carbon atoms, e.g. low- or high-density polyethylenes, or copolymers of ethylene and other olefines such as propylene and butylene with each other or with other monomers such as ethyl acrylate, methyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate and vinyl acetate. The latter type of copolymer should have at least 50% by weight of olefin monomer in the polymer molecule a preferred copolymer being of 88% ethylene and 12% ethyl acrylate. The carpet web need only be pile on base or tufting material, the olefin layer serving to bind the pile and to size or stiffen as well as to bond the web to the backing. The tufting material may be burlap, hemp, cotton or synthetics such as nylon or polyolefins and may additionally be sized with starch, latex or a polyolefin; the pile may be natural or synthetic yarn, e.g. wool, cotton, rayon, nylon, and acrylic or propylene fibres. The foamed layer may be e.g. of natural or synthetic rubber such as styrene-butadiene, or of polyurethanes, polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride and need not be the same width as the carpet web. The carpet web and foam layer may be laminated by passing them through rolls whilst extruding the polyolefin layer between them (Fig. 3, not shown) or on to either or both of them before they enter the nip of the rolls; alternatively, the polymer may be scattered in granular form on to the carpet back and fused into a molten layer by infra-red lamps. The rolls apply pressure to regulate the thickness and penetration of the molten layer and may also heat or cool the laminate as it passes through depending on the characteristics required. Cooling may instead be effected by forced air.
