Abstract

Tufting with nylon or acrylic yarn is effected through a base sheet of foamed polyurethane in which is embedded an open mesh woven fabric or a layer of randomly disposed strands of nylon or polypropylene. The base may have thin synthetic sheets adhered to its faces, or a skin of denser foam may be formed naturally during the manufacture of the base. The tufting may be performed with the base only partly cured so that the tufts are anchored by adhesion when curing is complete. A backing of latex can be applied alone or followed by a further backing of foamed material or a scrim woven from paper.
