Abstract

1329915 Backing carpets ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 19 April 1971 [23 March 1970] 25025/71 Heading B2E Backing compositions in hot melt form are applied to carpets, the backing composition comprising atactic polypropylene and 10 to 90 parts by weight thermoplastic hydrocarbon petroleum resin per 100 parts of polypropylene and a mineral filler in amounts up to 80% by weight of total carpet backing material. Fillers specified include chalk, heavy spar, kieselguhr or talc, and other additives are polyisobutylene which is liquid at room temperature, paraffinic softener oil and titanium dioxide. The carpet base fabric and pile may be of natural or synthetic fibres, e.g. jute,- polypropylene or polyamides and the pile may be wool, polypropylene, polyamide, polyester or polyacrylonitrile. The carpet base may also be knitted, woven, tufted or felt. The application of the backing composition is by conventional methods the amount being up to 4 Kg/m<SP>2</SP> corresponding to a thickness up to 4 mm.
