English Français Español Ελληνικά Despite the widespread attention paid to the spatial expansion of extractive frontiers around the globe, the multiple ways in which states and extractive transnational corporations interfere with and exercise authority over local populations in spaces of extraction remain underexplored. Drawing on insights from the literature on critical geography and on current debates over extractivism and neoextractivism, this chapter explores the corporate strategies and techniques of power used in spaces of extraction, and discusses how states promote the forcible appropriation of land for mining operations. While most critical perspectives on extractivism have mainly focused on Latin America, Africa and Asia, where the expansion of extractive activities has intensified and become widespread, my focus is on the expansion of extractive activities in Europe, which has attracted renewed interest 5/25/23, 11:14 AM Spaces of Extraction in Europe: The Corporate-State-Mining Complex and Resistance in Greece and Romania https://journals.openedition.org/poldev/5914#quotation 2/22

Subject of this research are the transformations of space due to the operation of mining activities in the territorial unity of the North East (NE) Chalkidiki. The changes occurring in the field of application of the extractive development model, are investigated.
The procedures of changes in social relations of mining activities in the territorial unity of the North East (N.E.) Chalkidiki and the transformations of spatial planning (in the existing framework of relations between the state and market) constitute fields to be investigated in the research process. In addition, the paper will examine the environmental implications of the investment and will explore the compatibility of mining with other productive activities.
This study approaches the research questions with bibliographical research and fieldwork. Throughout the fieldwork, the new social relations and forms of action that are emerging within the local movements in Chalkidiki come into the spotlight.
Keywords: Chalkidiki, mining, land-grabbing, local community, social movements.
Narrative step: Facing the current crisis: critique & resistance.

The aim of this dissertation is to study the transformations of space, as well as of the social and economic relations, due to the upcoming operations of the Hellas Gold mining project in NE Halkidiki. This area includes sixteen residential areas, which belong administratively to the Municipality of Aristotle. The investigation targets the mechanisms which established NE Halkidiki as a mining field of exploitation of its mineral wealth and created the conditions of today's social polarization around the mining project of Hellas Gold. The argument developed in the dissertation is that, in the study area, extractive capital is a key mechanism-modulator of confrontational socio-spatial conditions. Extractive capital affects and directs the spatial planning policies, social stratification and the local labor market. The space, which has become a tool to serve the mining industry, is further instrumentalized through the current investment, which is implemented within the current economic crisis. The research is not limited to the local scale but attempts to highlight the interdependency of different scales, from local to global and vice versa. The theoretical analysis views extraction as part of the development process and focuses on the permanence of the processes of primary accumulation and on critical theories of space, in order to describe the processes involved in the intensification of extraction. The intensification of mining projects is related to the capitalist accumulation through the financialization of mining, land grabbing and the geographies of uneven spatial development. The disruption of the local spatial balance as well as of social cohesion due to mining projects demonstrates the role of spatial policies and of the wider economic conjuncture. The research is further supported by two case studies from the global context of mining, following two field visits which took place in Cochabamba, Bolivia, and Rosia Montana, Romania. In this dissertation, special emphasis is placed on the significance of the multinational extractive company Eldorado Gold (the parent company of Hellas Gold) in order to understand the current situation in NE Halkidiki. The Canadian multinational company affects all levels of spatial analysis and provides the necessary interconnections between global and local level. The gold mining project indicates that the circulation of capital adopts both formal and informal ways to establish its power and to expand its zones of exploitation in crisis-ridden countries. The financial crisis and the austerity measures that followed provided an opportunity for the multinational extractive capital. This led to the selection of extractivism as the undisputable development model regarding the particular study area.
