ABSTRACT Current financial and economic crisis, as well as growing environmental pressures put seriously under question traditional development patterns. The need to develop alternative models able to address current economic situation through the exploitation of sustainable patterns is of crucial importance. The innovation of this current study is the incorporation of energy and environmental corporate responsibility (EECR) in decision making, supporting particularly the development of a new model for investment evaluation. A bi-objective programming model is introduced in order to provide the Pareto optimal portfolios (Pareto set) based on the net present value of projects and the EECR score of firms. A systematic decision making approach using Monte Carlo simulation and multi-objective programming is also developed in order to deal with the inherent uncertainty in the objective functions’ coefficients. The robustness of the Pareto set as a whole, as well as the robustness of the individual Pareto optimal portfolios is also assessed. The proposed approach facilitates banking organizations and institutions to the selection of firms applying for financial support and credit granting, within the frame of their EECR. Finally, an illustrative real-world application of the proposed model is presented.

Recent calls to do climate policy research with, rather than for, stakeholders have been answered in non-modelling science. Notwithstanding progress in modelling literature, however, very little of the scenario space traces back to what stakeholders are ultimately concerned about. With a suite of eleven integrated assessment, energy system and sectoral models, we carry out a model inter-comparison for the EU, the scenario logic and research questions of which have been formulated based on stakeholders' concerns. The output of this process is a scenario framework exploring where the region is headed rather than how to achieve its goals, extrapolating its current policy efforts into the future. We find that Europe is currently on track to overperforming its pre-2020 40% target yet far from its newest ambition of 55% emissions cuts by 2030, as well as looking at a 1.0-2.35 GtCO2 emissions range in 2050. Aside from the importance of transport electrification, deployment levels of carbon capture and storage are found intertwined with deeper emissions cuts and with hydrogen diffusion, with most hydrogen produced post-2040 being blue. Finally, the multi-model exercise has highlighted benefits from deeper decarbonisation in terms of energy security and jobs, and moderate to high renewables-dominated investment needs.

Industrial processes are associated with high amounts of energy consumed and greenhouse gases emitted, stressing the urgent need for low-carbon sectoral transitions. This research reviews the energy-intensive iron and steel, cement and chemicals industries of Germany and the United Kingdom, two major emitting countries with significant activity, yet with different recent orientation. Our socio-technical analysis, based on the Sectoral Innovation Systems and the Systems Failure framework, aims to capture existing and potential drivers of or barriers to diffusion of sustainable industrial technologies and extract implications for policy. Results indicate that actor structures and inconsistent policies have limited low-carbon innovation. A critical factor for the successful decarbonisation of German industry lies in overcoming lobbying and resistance to technological innovation caused by strong networks. By contrast, a key to UK industrial decarbonisation is to drive innovation and inv...

The promotion of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) and Energy Efficiency (EE) is a central aim of the world energy policy in order to contribute in reducing greenhouse emissions. Moreover, Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) allows Annex I countries to achieve their emission targets. Financial assistance to developing countries is needed in order to avoid high increase of their greenhouse emissions associated with their development. Today, a large number of Annex I countries are also setting up programmes to fund RES and EE investment through CDM. These include Denmark, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, Norway, Canada and Austria. These programmes are being applied by international organisations and numerous non-governmental organisations and they facilitate projects throughout the developing world. Initial experiences have also been gained from the "World Bank Prototype Carbon Fund - PCF" and the "Dutch CDM tender-programme - CERUPT". The most important result of these initial experiences is the creation of appropriate organisational structures and the use of qualified personnel by both the host and investor countries and the respective participants in the project, thus, building the capacity to facilitate the CDM. This paper describes the main role of CDM funding programmes and their potential role in promoting RES and EE projects. Energy is essential for economic and social development. About ninety per cent of the world energy supplies are provided by fossil fuels, with the associated emissions causing local, regional and global environmental problems. Most energy projections show that current and expected hture global energy demand patterns are not sustainable. Even when assuming massive improvements in energy intensity, long term projections indicate that world energy demand may increase dramatically, with most of this increase, taking place in developing countries. These trends indicate that, in order to comply with the necessary conditions for the three dimensions of sustainability (economic, environmental and social) with respect to energy production and consumption, a decoupling of economic activity from fossil primary energy consumption should be achieved. Increasing the share of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) in the energy balance enhances sustainability and helps to improve the security of energy supply by reducing dependence on imported energy sources. In addition, the development of Energy Efficiency (EE) is a central aim of the world energy policy in order to contribute in reducing greenhouse emissions ( 11. The interest in RES and EE increased when the oil crises of the 1970's made everyone aware of the fact that fossil resources would run out one day - but since there is some uncertainty about when that will actually happen the efforts made in this area remained rather tentative.

ABSTRACT Despite an increasing demand for considering sustainability aspects in asset management, there is a lack of guidance for decision-makers on how this can be achieved. The aim of this research is to present rational decision support for sustainable management of industrial assets in situations where there are multiple conflicting objectives. For this purpose, a Multi-criteria decision analysis framework that incorporates sustainability criteria over the whole life cycle has been developed. Stakeholder participation and uncertainty assessment are considered explicitly allowing for a holistic perspective and higher confidence in the results. In order to facilitate communication, methods for visualization of numerical results are highlighted. While the focus of this study is on the development of the framework, the challenges of applying it and potential steps to address these are discussed through an application in the shipping sector.

Purpose – Greece is a net importer of oil and gas and is among the most vulnerable countries of the European Union (EU) on energy supply disruptions. Furthermore, is considered a “crossroad” of existing and forthcoming infrastructure for importing energy to the EU. The purpose of this paper is the presentation of the web tool that implements the developed methodology for the quantification of socio‐economic risks of oil and gas corridors. The tool is applied to the main present and future oil and gas corridors to Greece, and the related outcomes are discussed. Design/methodology/approach – A structured and coherent review on the future and present oil and natural gas (NG) corridors to Greece was elaborated, based on desk analysis and collection of the related data from national and international sources. Factor analysis was employed for the quantification of socio‐economic risks of each energy corridor. Particular emphasis was laid on the tool's design, so as to be user‐friendly, combining intuitive menus and navigation throughout the steps of the system. Findings – The calculation of socio‐economic risks of the main oil and gas corridors to Greece provides operative and measurable concepts for supporting energy‐modelling processes. Indeed, this paper provides useful insights on the factors affecting the smooth energy supply and the reliability of oil and gas supply options to the Greek energy system. Moreover, the presented web tool can be used as a reference point for the researcher working on energy supply risks quantification. Originality/value – The introduction of the energy corridors perspective in the valuation of supply security is of significant importance, taking into account the constantly increasing energy dependence of EU countries. To the best of the authors' knowledge, a structured and coherent review of the future and present oil and NG corridors to Greece is not present in the international literature. In addition to this, the development of the web tool is a clear contribution towards the quantification of the economic and socio‐political risk analysis and a step forward of the existing studies.

ABSTRACT Transmission operators and regulators face the enormous challenge to meet both the request for a high-performing grid as well as the public's concern about the burdens of electric power transmission. Although huge infrastructural projects for the development of interconnections are at several stages, the associated transmission burdens are not yet fully incorporated in the respective socioeconomic analysis. In this respect, the aim of this paper is to present a collective summary of electricity transmission burdens and their associated impacts. To increase coherence, the burdens have been classified in the following categories: transmission losses; electromagnetic fields; infrastructure; visual intrusion; noise; interruption of supply; land use; ecosystems; and property values. Moreover, the burdens relation with transmission technologies and associated impacts are illustrated in original overview tables. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Nowadays cities tend to become "Smarter", usually disregarding the issues of energy efficiency and sustainability. Therefore, optimizing energy use in a city remains a challenge and respective decision support systems are important to guide local authorities toward that direction. This paper provides a holistic approach presenting a Smart City Energy Assessment Framework (SCEAF) along with a specific web based decision support tool, the so-called e-SCEAF, which can provide local authorities with fruitful results for assessing the energy behavior and performance of their city. The tool merges heterogeneous information, such as clearly quantifiable energy related indicators, the related city policy context performance and the integration of smart infrastructure. This multi-source information fusion is based on the 2-tuple linguistic representation model of Herrera and Martínez. This particular model has been widely used in decision problems and was mainly selected due to the fact that it provides linguistic results that are accurate and easy to understand by the cities' local authorities. The performance, usefulness and effectiveness of the SCEAF framework and the e-SCEAF tool are tested on a real life application in three different cities, Savona (Italy), Sant Cugat del Vallès (Spain) and Zaanstad (The Netherlands). In this respect, the role of fusion methods and algorithms for merging multiple information will be evaluated in a "real life environment".

Nowadays, Serbia needs to disengage from the broad use of fossil fuels and turn to the “attractive” Renewable Energy Sources (RES) for energy production, since the Kyoto Protocol ratification, so as to resolve systematically the problem of energy demand. In addition, research indicates that Serbia is a country with high potential and favourable conditions for RES energy production, as the country’s potential could supply almost half of its primary energy needs. The paper provides an overview of Serbia’s energy sector status quo, so as to emphasize the necessity for RES implementation in order to balance the country’s energy deficit. The aim is to investigate and present the country’s prospects in the RES sector, revealing the proven RES potential and pointing out that the unexploited RES potential together with an adequately well structured energy sector would create great possibilities and conditions for a new market.

ABSTRACT Nowadays, buildings are responsible for about 40% of the EU's total final energy consumption and greenhouses emissions, putting them among the largest end-use sectors globally. In this context, a number of studies exist in the international literature analyzing the importance of effective energy and environmental management of the buildings. With respect to the above, the main aim of the paper is to present a building automation and control tool for remote and real time monitoring of energy consumption in the building sector. Apart from analyzing the building's energy profile, the tool integrates control scenarios that minimizes the energy consumption and rationalizes the energy use in the highest degree. The proposed tool achieves significant decrease in the operating cost of active system in a tertiary sector building, while maintaining desirable comfort.

ABSTRACT Cities are characterized by a concentration of people, communities, activities, flows and impacts leading to severe sustainability challenges. Energy is an essential component of life in cities, as it supports the whole spectrum of their economic activities, and secures a certain level of quality of life to residents. Nowadays cities tend to become “Smarter”, usually disregarding the issues of energy efficiency and sustainability. The current work provides City Authorities with an effective framework to assess the behavior and performance of a City, reflecting the clearly quantifiable energy related indicators, but also the related policy context performance and the integration of Smart infrastructure. The framework can be designed generally for the whole activities spectrum of a city, but it can also be customized per sector, providing more focused information.

ABSTRACT Nowadays, decision support system (DSS) analysts use in an increasingly frequent basis, non-homogeneous variables for solving decision making problems. This is particularly true for energy policy related local planning. It is indeed crucial for the city authorities to know how optimal their use of energy is, by collecting and analyzing multidisciplinary data sets. In this framework and for the needs of a DSS concerning smart cities, this paper presents OMIMS (Online Multidisciplinary Information Management Software), a cross-platform web based software tool, able to assess non-homogeneous variables in a smart city environment. OMIMS is based on the 2-tuple representation model of F. Herrera, enhanced with multiple visual and collaborative tools. Along with OMIMS, we provide a Pilot Appraisal in order to present its potentials for fruitful decision analysis.
