2) "Working on a life-writing project" (to self-publish), the redeveloping of my master's thesis, a historical biography of my maternal grandmother (a Black educator in the South).
***Synopsis:
Transitioning at the age of forty, my grandmother's life story sheds light on early 20th-century Black culture and leads up to the Great Depression and World War II. Her sudden demise in 1946 remains a family mystery. Originally titled "Memories: Writing the Life of Mayme Williams Carney," this work is a reflexive narrative, or as defined by some scholars it is as an "autoethnography."
This study includes primary sources such as my grandmother's poetry (including her journal), and there are oral sources from her former colleagues, students, and friends that I collected during my field research. Writing from this collection of materials is the challenge, because she transitioned long before my birth. (In other words I have known my grandmother in spirit rather than in flesh.)***
3) Collating a teaching guide on African Women and Culture is a project in progress, based upon my lectures (resident and those written for online modules).

This historiographical essay examines major debates about the politics of race during the New Deal. A central focus is the way in which Black Americans viewed FDR and how scholars have portrayed that view. It illustrates the impact of activists and leaders on New Deal policy. In several ways, this chapter includes original research from my dissertation.
According to the editors, the text as a whole aims to present scholarship on the New Deal written by new scholars covering this period.

'Use our qualified Negro women among the active forces who are working toward the protection of our democratic stronghold,' wrote Bethune in her appeal to President Roosevelt on June 22, 1940. Mary McLeod Bethune had arranged for Congressman Louis Ludlow of Indiana to introduce the statement on the floor of the House of Representatives.
This chapter chronicles the political activism of Bethune and "her National Council of Negro Women (NCNW)" in which she served as president.
Bethune and the NCNW pressed the Roosevelt administration for inclusion, for a place at the table in deciding the role and welfare of Black civilians and military (especially in terms of jobs and in promoting an anti-discrimination policy) during the buildup for defense in the early 1940s. It also shows Bethune's "push" to work/interact with White women's organizations whom were already “at the table."
During this period, Bethune promoted the NCNW as 800,000 Black women strong, with affiliates throughout the country. This chapter also describes Bethune and the NCNW's public support behind Asa Philip Randolph's 1941 March-on-Washington Movement which lead to the passage of the Fair Employment Practices Act that year and prohibited discrimination in defense industry and government jobs.
Additionally, Bethune's political alliance with Eleanor Roosevelt is discussed along with her connections with U.S. Secretary of Labor Francis Perkins, Caroline Ware (history professor and activist) representing the Advisory Committee to the National Defense Council, and a host of other White women's organizations. Philip Randolph and the subsequent creation by the Roosevelt Administration of the Fair Employment Practices Commission. Rhoda Jones provides a concise overview of the role of Randolph and the March on Washington, albeit adding little to what recent biographies of Randolph by Beth Bates and Cornelius Bynum have covered. However, Gloria-Yvonne's article on "Mary McLeod Bethune, the National Council of Negro Women, and the Prewar Push for Equal Opportunity for Defense Projects" uncovers the ways in which African American women influenced the incorporation of black men and women into federal jobs during WWII. This is chapter six of my dissertation with only eleven pages available for preview here on Academia.edu. It chronicles the beginning of Bethune's NCNW. Readers gain a sense of her organizing principles, why she felt it was necessary to "pool" Black feminine political energy at this time, in the mid 1930s. You will also get a sense of the friction she encountered from other Black activist women--an aspect of her political career that has not been properly examined. In my narrative, archival/primary source research takes precedence. Pulling particularly from newspapers of that era lend a more complete picture of the dynamics between these particular Black women activists.

I am in the process of redeveloping this chapter to self-publish as part of a three-book series, "A Passion For Social Equality," covering Bethune's political activism during the 1930s and 1940s. POLITICAL ADVOCACY FOR JUSTICE is the title of the third book, forthcoming.
POLITICAL ADVOCACY FOR JUSTICE will include an expanded narrative, interpretation, and analysis of Bethune's activism during the prewar period, from 1940-1941, and material regarding her activism during WWII. The chronology follows the 15th century up to the 19th century period of British Abolitionism. Key figures of British and (North) American abolitionism are highlighted, such as Granville Sharpe and Anthony Benezet to illustrate transatlantic communication in the beginnings of this liberation movement, which led up to the Somerset decision.

From Text: "Lovie Austin was an African American female blues pianist who was popular during the Chicago Jazz Age of the 1920s. . . . . There is scant information on her family and upbringing and on her beginning years. Austin was a college-trained musician, rare for her time."
This biographical sketch is based on my original research of primary and secondary sources. Davis, a professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz, is the subject of the recent film, "Free Angela and All Political Prisoners." She argues that the FBI’s latest move, much like its initial targeting of Shakur and other Black Panthers four decades ago, is politically motivated. "It seems to me that this act incorporates or reflects the very logic of terrorism," Davis says. "I can’t help but think that it’s designed to frighten people who are involved in struggles today. Forty years ago seems like it was a long time ago. In the beginning of the 21st century, we’re still fighting around the very same issues — police violence, healthcare, education, people in prison." A professor of criminal justice at Rutgers University, Hinds has represented Shakur since 1973. "This is a political act pushed by the state of New Jersey, by some members of Congress from Miami, and with the intent of putting pressure on the Cuban government and to inflame public opinion," Hinds says. "There is no way to appeal someone being put on the terrorists list."

Course begins on Monday, November 4, 2013
Registration is now open for the Global Energy Management (GEM) Program’s free, online energy business course titled Fundamentals of Global Energy Business on Coursera. Coursera is a learning platform that partners with top universities to offer free online courses globally.
Taught by GEM Instructor, Dr. Michael Orlando, the Fundamentals of Global Energy Business course will provide students with an introduction to the business of primary energy production. It will examine the nature of demand and supply in global energy markets, and business considerations for participants in those markets.

When new publics consume, manipulate and connect with field recordings and digital cultural archives, their involvement raises important practical and ethical questions. This volume explores the political repercussions of studying marginalised languages; the role of online tools in ensuring responsible access to sensitive cultural materials; and ways of ensuring that when digital documents are created, they are not fossilized as a consequence of being archived. Lloyd Lionel Gaines (1911-1939), [an African-American] one of eleven children, was denied admission to the University of Missouri School of Law in 1936 solely on the grounds that Missouri's state constitution called for "separate education of the races." With the NAACP Gaines sued in 1938 and won his case before the United States Supreme Court. At age 28 he disappeared in Chicago and was never seen or heard from again. Collection of documents on Gaines's life, including photographs,
family correspondence, and materials related to the Supreme Court

It is made up of a series of interactive workshops in which invited academics, and [Univ. of] Roehampton staff, introduce theoretical ideas which have influenced their own historical work and explore the ways in which these ideas can be deployed in research and writing,' according to their website. The current Chronicle of Higher Education article "'Someone Searched for You': Academia.edu and Me: A mound of data, both tantalizingly suggestive and wholly inconclusive, presents itself for my consideration" is not constructive criticism of Academia.edu. Perhaps, more articles and responses from an Academia.edu spokesperson and its users will help to clarify the (individual, domestic, and international) benefits of using this platform to share research/knowledge. Although, I am not sure if the Chronicle would acknowledge the benefits. I sense the Chronicle piece speaks to a large community of scholars who do not appreciate the philosophy of sharing research/scholarly work.

As the first chapter of my dissertation, readers are introduced briefly to the political career of Mary McLeod Bethune (1875-1955) and the purpose of this political biography. An overview of texts on the New Deal, Black leadership, and women and the New Deal is provided with an analysis of how Bethune's activism is central to these three areas which are illustrated throughout the dissertation.
Along with gaining insight into the political life history of Bethune, readers will find an introduction to historiography that touches on United States History, Black Studies, and Women's Studies.

This chapter introduces readers to Mary McLeod Bethune's early life, briefly covering her upbringing and family, but also discussing her founding of a grammar school for girls at the turn of the twentieth century and her development of that school into a junior college while she also pursued political activism and gained the role of president of the National Association of Colored Women in 1924.
