To whom it may concern:
I was born with cerebral palsy and my voice does not work. Thanks to my mother, who
taught me to read and write, I learned to spell and it totally changed my life. What brings
me incredible sorrow is watching my non -verbal friends miss out on the fullness of life
because no one believes that they are worth teaching . Many disabled children with
communication issues are not being taught in special schools. They are just being babysat! If
literacy was taught to them in special schools, more children would be unlocked like me.
Underestimating disabled children is robbing them of their right to education and
communication. Reforming the special needs curriculum must be a priority.
Sincerely, Jonathan Bryan

There’s no sense in doing everything you can do to take time to be with your kids if you’re
going to take yourself too seriously. This will probably give your kids the impression that
spending time with them is just another obligation, like work. Always make it a rule to laugh
a lot while you are home, then your kids will pick up the good demeanor and humor from
you. This really hits home. If you’re at home and your mind’s at work, your kids can tell. If
you want your kids to have a great sense of humor and understand that they are a priority
in your life, make it a point to be home a lot and to laugh in front of them. A great way to
show them that your attention is where it should be is by having fun together.

The famous children’s author Frances Clarke Sayers once said, “I am summoned by books!”
While today our summons may arrive via an e-book reader, the essence of books as a
gateway to abundant vocabularies, content, and imaginations remains the same as ever. For
that reason, as we consider the skills our students need to survive and thrive in the 21st
century, we should understand that we and our students have no more essential , life -
enhancing resources than books . Indeed , the saying “ a rising tide lifts all boats ” is
appropriate when we consider reading. We have decades of research that proves passionate
readers are almost always skillful readers and strong writers. They know more about the
conventions of language , such as spelling , punctuation and grammar, have extensive
vocabularies, and know about the world.
① extensive reading leads to academic achievements
② reading books alone does not guarantee success
③ when we read, other language skills improve too
④ reading lifts your spirit when you’re down
⑤ grammar is what matters when writing

In one experiment, researchers surveyed golfers and asked which act of moving a ball
illegally would make other golfers most uncomfortable: using a club, their foot or their hand.
More than twice as many said it would be less of a problem to use their club than to pick
the ball up with their hands. Our willingness to cheat increases as we gain psychological
distance from the action. So as we gain distance from money, it becomes easier to see
ourselves as doing something other than stealing. That’s why many of us have no problem
taking pencils or a stapler home from work when we’d never take the equivalent amount of
money from petty cash. And that’s why becoming a cashless society concerns us. Virtual
payments are a great convenience, but the farther people get from using actual money, the
easier it becomes to steal.”

One study after another is coming to the same conclusion: The Arctic is heating up a lot
faster than earlier research suggested , a phenomenon known as “Arctic amplification .”
Greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide are to blame. Heat trapped by greenhouse gases
further warms polar air and thaws significant areas of the Arctic. Melting of sea ice is
another factor responsible for the accelerating pace of Arctic warming. The white color of
sea ice helps the ice remain frozen by reflecting about 80% of the sun’s rays. Once ice melts,
though, it leaves large areas of blackish-green ocean, and those dark-colored areas absorb
the rays and trap the heat. Thawing arctic permafrost also contributes to arctic amplification.
Because it is full of carbon, when melted, it releases carbon into the air, which then turns
into CO2.

Children and young people first begin to express themselves and their needs through their
behavior. For example, babies cry to communicate to their parents that they have a need to
be fed, comforted or to have their diapers changed. Even after they begin to develop
language, both children and young people continue to use their behavior to communicate
with those around them. For example, when young children meet someone new they tend
to cling to their caregiver for safety or look to their caregiver for non-verbal cues regarding
whether the new person is safe to interact with. After making sure that they get positive
answers from their caregivers, they then start to talk to the stranger.

We are so absorbed in our routines that it’s difficult to have an awareness of the factors
that influence us. We usually think of ourselves as sitting in the driver’s seat, with ultimate
control over the decisions we make, but this perception has more to do with our __________
than with reality—the hidden forces that shape our decisions. For example, a gambler often
says “I can stop the game when I win.” or “I can quit when I want to.” at the roulette table
or slot machine but he simply doesn’t stop. Players are unknowingly encouraged to keep
playing while winning to continue their streak and to keep playing while losing so they can
win back their money. The gambler is eager to perform risky behavior against what is in his
or her best interest.

When you eat, your body breaks down foods into glucose, the main energy source for
your body. Insulin then turns glucose into fuel your cells need, and ① extra glucose is
stored in your liver and muscles. When you haven’t eaten for several hours and your blood
sugar level ② drops, your body will stop producing insulin, and another hormone, called
glucagon, signals your liver to release stored glucose into your bloodstream. This keeps your
blood sugar ③ within a standard range until you eat again. If you have diabetes, however,
your body might not be able to make insulin. As a result, glucose is ④ exhausted in the
bloodstream and can cause serious problems . To correct this problem , you might take
insulin or other medications to ⑤ lower blood sugar levels. But too much insulin may cause
your blood sugar level to drop too much, causing hypoglycemia.
